    • symptoms of a bad stator? and a clutch question so I've got my winter rebuild done, and ive been on 3 rides since then on a brand new battery, and its already half dead. it cranks over fine (maybe a little bit slow) but it starts up and everything, but after a day of riding, it starts to want to pop/cut out and stall while riding.
      • What would be causing this? A failing regulator? A failing stator? Just wondering if anyone else has experienced these symptoms. I didn't have time to diagnose it on the spot and I didn't want to risk a dead battery tonight in the company parking lot so I rode the 1150GS to work instead.

      • There are all kinds of symptoms depending on if the stator goes totally bad or is "going" bad. Every once in a while a guy has bad reeds causing a "miss" and thought that the stator was going bad. In some cases you get no spark. Sometimes you get weak spark and sometimes you get a missing condition a couple of seconds after you push the throttle.

      • The stator has 2 tapped coils, one feeds each switchbox. Usually 1 whole bank goes out when the stator is bad. The trigger has 3 coils, each feeding 2 cylinders opposite in timing, ie 1 and 4. If the bad cylinders are opposite in timing, it's the trigger. If not, either both switchboxes or the stator or a couple of coils is bad.
      • Engine stalling One of the first symptoms of a bad ignition pickup is an engine that stalls. An old or failing ignition pickup may cut out signal intermittently, which may cause the engine to stall. The engine may suddenly just shut off, almost as if the key had been turned off.
